HST calculator & receipts
Add or remove HST or GST for any province, and make a quick receipt or invoice.
Help and background Back to the tool
How it works
- 1 Pick where you sell and type an amount. You'll see the tax added on top, and the tax taken out of a price that already includes it, with the sum that gets there.
- 2 Fill in the receipt: your business, your GST/HST number (checked as you type), and what you sold, a line at a time, with how each is taxed. It adds up as you go.
- 3 Download it to print or email. Selling away from the till? Print a blank receipt book instead: numbered, three to a page, with a stub to keep.
Free, with no account. The sums are worked out on this device, and nothing you type is sent anywhere until you download. If you ask it to, this device remembers your business details for next time. Nothing is kept on ours.
Good to know
- Is this tax advice?
- No. It's a calculator and a receipt maker, using the rates on the CRA's rate page as they stood on April 1, 2025. Rates change, and so do the rules about what's taxed. Where a reading needs checking it says (verify). If a lot rides on it, ask your accountant.
- Why doesn't taking 13% off give the price before tax?
- Because the 13% was worked out on the smaller price, before tax. Taking 13% off $113.00 leaves $98.31; the price was $100.00. To take tax out, divide by 1 plus the rate: $113.00 ÷ 1.13 = $100.00. The tax inside is 13/113 of the total, which is the fraction the calculator shows.
- Which province's rate do I charge?
- Generally the rate where the sale happens: in your shop, your province's. Goods you ship generally take the rate where they're delivered, and services generally the rate where your customer is, though the place-of-supply rules have many special cases (verify).
- Can a customer claim the tax on my receipt?
- A business customer can, as an input tax credit, if the receipt shows enough. What it needs grows with the total: under $100, $100 or more, and $500 or more (SOR/91-45, s. 3). The checklist beside the receipt shows what this one has, and takes you to what's missing.
- Does the number check mean I'm registered?
- No. The last of a business number's nine digits checks the others, which catches most typos, and the check makes sure the account starts with RT. Whether a number is registered only the CRA can say: anyone can look it up in the GST/HST registry.
- Do I have to charge GST/HST?
- Not while you're a small supplier: $30,000 or less of taxable sales in a calendar quarter and over the last four together. You can register anyway, which lets you claim the tax you pay. If you're not registered, don't charge it, and the receipt says so. Taxi and ride-sharing drivers must register whatever they earn. Provincial sales taxes have their own rules (verify).
- What's the point-of-sale rebate?
- In Ontario the provincial part of the HST, 8%, comes off at the till for some things, such as children's clothing and footwear, children's car seats, diapers, printed books and newspapers, and prepared food and drinks of $4 or less, so they pay 5%. The other HST provinces have their own, shorter lists (verify).
- Zero-rated or exempt?
- Both mean no tax on the receipt. Zero-rated things, like basic groceries and prescription drugs, are taxed at 0%, so you can still claim the tax you paid to sell them. Exempt ones, like most health care and child care, aren't taxed at all, and you can't. The receipt marks each line Z or E when they're mixed with taxed ones.
- How does cash rounding work?
- Since the penny went in 2013, cash totals round to the nearest 5 cents: 1 and 2 cents down, 3 and 4 up. The tax is worked out first, on the exact price, and only the cash total rounds (CRA, GI-131). Card and e-Transfer payments aren't rounded.
- How long should I keep receipts?
- Generally six years from the end of the year they're for. Keep a copy of every receipt you give: the download, or the stub in the receipt book.
- How do I print?
- On US Letter, at 100% or “Actual size”. The receipt book prints three to a page: cut along the dashes, staple a stack on the left, and tear each receipt off along the dotted line, keeping the stub.
