Pour cost calculator
What every pour costs out of the bottle, keg or case, and that cost as a share of the menu price. See the price that hits your target, Ontario's minimum for each pour, and what heavy pours give away.
Help and background Back to the tool
How it works
- 1 Add a drink: a spirit, wine by the glass, a fortified wine, draught on tap, or a can or bottle.
- 2 Say how big the bottle, keg or case is, what it cost you, and how much never makes it into a glass.
- 3 Give the pour and the menu price. The bottle draws itself with a mark at every pour and a gold line at the one that pays for it.
- 4 Set your own targets, then check the whole back bar, Ontario's minimum price for each pour, a happy hour, and what heavy pours give away in a year.
Free, with no account. Everything is worked out on this page: your bottle costs, pours and prices are never sent to us or put in a link. Remember keeps them on this device, and only while it's on.
Good to know
- What is pour cost?
- What one pour costs you, as a share of what you sell it for before tax. A pour that costs $1.50 and sells for $7.50 is a 20% pour cost. The rest pays for everything else and, with luck, leaves some over.
- What target should I use?
- Your own. The numbers filled in are a starting point, not an industry figure: rent, staff and what your customers will pay all change what works for your bar.
- Why a loss allowance?
- Not every drop gets sold. Spills, foam, line cleaning and wine that turns all come out of the same bottle or keg. Leaving them out makes every drink look cheaper than it is.
- What's the minimum price?
- Ontario sets a lowest price per standard serving that a licensed bar can charge, taxes in, and it scales with the size of the pour. The tool shows it for each drink as it reads the regulation. Rules change, so check the current regulation before you set a price.
- What's on the printed sheets?
- The pour chart is for behind the bar: every drink with its pour in millilitres and ounces and its price, with nothing about cost. The cost sheet is for the office, with every number.
