Shelf tag maker
Price tags for plain letter paper, with the unit price worked out, honest sale lines and Product of Canada claims worded the way the rules read.
Help and background Back to the tool
How it works
- 1 Pick a look and a size: a shelf strip, a card for a holder, a peg tag or a half-page sign. Each prints several to a sheet of plain letter paper.
- 2 Put in each item with its price and size, or paste a list from a spreadsheet. The unit price is worked out for you, in one unit across the store.
- 3 Mark what's on sale and where it's from, fix anything flagged, then print the tags and a till list to check the till rings up the same.
Free, with no account. The tags and the till list are made in your browser: your items and prices are never sent to us. Remember is off unless you turn it on, and then keeps your items, prices and look on this device only.
Good to know
- When can a tag say “Was”?
- Under the Competition Act, a “was”, “regular” or “compare at” price has to be the item's ordinary price: a good amount sold at it, or it was offered at it in good faith for a good while. A price that was barely ever charged doesn't count. Until you tick that the old price passes, the tag says Special and leaves it off. See the Competition Bureau on ordinary price claims.
- Product of Canada or Made in Canada?
- They aren't the same. For food, Product of Canada means all or nearly all of it is Canadian; Made in Canada needs the last real change made here and says where the ingredients came from. For other goods the Competition Bureau looks for 98% of the cost of making it for Product of Canada, and 51% with a qualifier for Made in Canada. The tool words each claim to match. See the CFIA on food and the Competition Bureau on other goods.
- Why one unit for the whole store?
- A unit price only helps if the tags beside it use the same one. Pick per 100 g or per kg for things sold by weight, and per 100 mL or per litre for liquids, and every tag follows. Sizes of the same item are compared, and a bigger pack that costs more per unit is flagged, with a price that fixes it. Unit prices are voluntary in most of Canada; Quebec has made them required for many grocery items (verify).
- Checking the till
- Shoppers notice when the till rings up more than the shelf. Many larger retailers follow the voluntary Scanner Price Accuracy Code: an item that scans higher is free up to $10, or $10 off. Small shops don't have to sign on, but the printed price check makes it quick to catch a mistake before the tags go up.
- Printing them true to size
- Print at 100% or “Actual size”, not “Fit to page”, so each tag measures what it says. Cut on the dashed lines; a paper trimmer keeps the edges straight. Card stock stands up better in a holder, and the Kraft style is drawn for brown card stock, so it prints only the ink.
