How it works

  1. 1 Pick your town and the areas you look after. It shows your sidewalk rule, and the Region’s salt guide for the size of each area.
  2. 2 When the snow stops, tap “Snow stopped”. The clock starts, counting down to your town’s deadline.
  3. 3 Each time someone clears, salts, sands or checks, tap the button. It stamps the time; add initials, the amount or a note if you like.
  4. 4 Print the log for the winter, or a page for one day. If someone slips, it pulls together what the log shows for the hours before.

Free, with no account. Everything is worked out in your browser: your log, initials and notes stay on this device and are never sent to us. Remember is off unless you turn it on, and then keeps your setup and the log on this device only. Anything typed about a fall is never kept, and it never asks who fell.

Good to know

Why keep a log at all?
After a fall, the questions are when the snow stopped, when it was cleared, and what went down. A log written at the time answers them better than memory weeks later. It’s also what an insurer or a contractor will ask for.
The sidewalk out front
Most towns in Waterloo Region make the owner or tenant clear the public sidewalk beside the property, within a set number of hours after the snow stops. Kitchener and Waterloo give 24 hours, Cambridge 36. Check your town’s by-law for your street.
The 60-day notice
Under Ontario’s Occupiers’ Liability Act, someone hurt by snow or ice on private property generally has to give written notice within 60 days, with the date, time and place. There are exceptions. If you get one, talk to your insurer.
Less salt, used well
Much of the Region’s drinking water comes from the ground, and salt that runs off ends up in it. The Region suggests clearing first, a few tablespoons of salt for a one-metre square, and sand or grit when it’s colder than −10 °C, when salt stops doing much.
Hiring a contractor?
Log their visits too, and ask for their own record. The contract says who does what, and when. Smart About Salt is a certification for contractors who use salt carefully.
