How it works

  1. 1 Say who owns the home, what kind it is, how it's heated and what it's had before. Some homes aren't in at all, and it says why.
  2. 2 Add the work: a heat pump and its tons, the attic and where it starts from, the windows and doors, solar and its size. Signed in, a job's estimate fills it in.
  3. 3 See it worked out two ways, without a home energy assessment and with one, and which pays more after the assessment's own cost.
  4. 4 Follow the steps in order, ticking each as it's done, and hand the homeowner a page of what they may get and what they do.

Free, with no account: it's worked out in your browser. Remember is off unless you turn it on, and then keeps it on this device. Signed in, it's kept in your account, so Today can say when a pre-approval or a claim is due and the estimate builder can put the rebates in its notes. The job's price stays with the check and is never on the homeowner's page. The made-up example is never kept.

Good to know

Which program is this?
Ontario's Home Renovation Savings, run by Enbridge Gas and Save on Energy. The amounts are copied from its pages, and the page says the day they were checked. It has no published end date, and its amounts and rules change, so check its site before you promise anything. The federal Canada Greener Homes grant and loan are closed to new applicants (verify), so they aren't here.
With an assessment or without?
A heat pump, a smart thermostat, attic insulation and solar can be claimed on their own. Wall and basement insulation, windows, air sealing and a heat pump water heater are paid only with an assessment, as a bundle of two or more, with the assessment paid back and a bonus for three. The assessment costs the homeowner up front, so the finder takes that off before it says which way pays more.
What loses a rebate?
Order. A heat pump put in before it's pre-approved gets nothing, and work done before the first assessment doesn't count. That's why the steps come in order, and why Today says a pre-approval that isn't ticked before the work.
Who gets the money?
The homeowner, from the program, once it has checked the work. Say "may get" and "up to": the program decides what's paid. Guidance only, not financial advice.
