How it works

  1. 1 Put in the crew by role: each one's wage, hours and how much of a job day gets billed. You go in too, at the pay you want.
  2. 2 Set the working year: days a week, holidays, vacation, sick days, and the shop and rain days no customer pays for.
  3. 3 Say what an employee costs on top: vacation pay, your workers' comp rate, benefits, boots and training. CPP and EI are added for you.
  4. 4 List the vans, tools and overhead, pick a profit, and get the rate for a crew hour and for each role, with the bars that show where it comes from. Print the worksheet.

Free, with no account. The sums run in your browser: the wages stay on this device and are never sent to us. Remember is off unless you turn it on, and then keeps them on this device only, where the estimate builder can offer the rate. The made-up crew is never kept.

Good to know

Why is the rate so much more than the wage?
Someone on payroll is paid for holidays, vacation and the shop and rain days, and for the driving and pickups in a job day, but a customer only pays for the hours on an invoice. On top of the wage you pay the employer's CPP and EI, workers' comp and any benefits, and the vans and insurance have to come out of the billed hours too.
Where do I find my workers' comp rate?
On your workers' comp board's statement or account. It's a dollar figure per $100 of insurable pay, set by the kind of work, and it changes each year. The tool doesn't guess it: leave it blank and nothing is added.
One crew rate, or a rate for each role?
Both are worked out. A crew rate is simpler on an estimate. Rates by role are fairer when an apprentice does the long, simple hours. Each role carries its own wage and costs, and an even share of the overhead for every hour it bills.
How sure is the number?
CPP and EI use CRA's 2026 rates and maximums; Quebec's QPP and QPIP aren't worked out. Vacation pay, public holidays and workers' comp are what you type, so check the rules where you work. Your own pay goes in before income tax: the hourly rate finder works that out. Guidance, not tax or payroll advice.
